Dongjiang River Partner Upstream Downstream Partnership Project

Dongjiang (East River) supplies drinking water for 30 million people in Guangdong and Hong Kong. It is the water of life but is under threat from upstream ecological degradation and downstream pollution from urbanization and industrialization. To safeguard Dongjiang’s water catchment and water quality, there is the need to rally upstream and downstream partnership.
Staff of CEBM participated the above project which is a new environmental project organized by Friends of the Earth (HK), which aims to build upstream and downstream partnership to safeguard the Dongjiang source and the drinking water security for millions in downstream Guangdong Province and Hong Kong.
Period: 2008–2018
Core Programs:
- Planting trees to enhance water catchment;
- Install biogas to reduce firewood logging and prevent animal waste pollution;
- Dongjiang volunteer services;
- Project Partners;
- Alleviate porverty and incubate a green village economy.
The long-term goal is to realize the establishment of eco-compensation mechanisam through “River Partner Project” in the Dongjiang source region. It aims to rally cross-sectoral participation to enhance resonsibility, monitoring and compensation and to showcase a constructive and innovative approach whereby the Dongjiang River beneficiaries repay the people at the source region.
