Plastic Pellets Cleanup Action - Lamma Island

Aug 12, 2012

Typhoon Vicente hit Hong Kong on 23 July 2012, causing six containers loaded with 150 tonnes of polypropylene pellets (in which originally for manufacturing various plastic products) to be lost off a ship. A large quantity of plastic pellets were released into the ocean and subsequently began washing up onto Hong Kong’s beaches and threatening our marine life especially smaller fish and birds, who may ingest them and ultimately die, food chain risk is unlikely to be significant.

The Staff of Canon Electronic Business Machines (H.K.) Co. Ltd. self-organized a group visited one of the affected beaches Shek Pai Wan in Lamma Island on 12 August, 2012 to assist with cleanup operations to minimize the impact of the incident on the environment, food safety and human health.
